Strategic decision making by Rubina Ratnakar

Managers have to deal with many things in their daily business routine. Decision-making is one of the key roles to be played by a manager. One may have to make simple decisions and may have to make strategic decisions as well. In this blog, Rubina Ratnakar lists some tips on strategic decision-making for managers.

First of all, you need to know about the problem in depth. Correct knowledge about the matter and related facts will help in taking the right steps. If the problem is complex then you should begin by simplifying it.

The next thing you should do is to understand the importance of the decision. If you do not make the decisions on time, you are making your work and life suffer by no changing the pre-existing conditions. You may have to face the consequences of delaying the decisions as well.

It is said that we should follow our hearts. In strategic decision-making, it is the opposite of that. You should not follow your heart and you should not think logically. Practicality is the key to decision-making. You should think about all the outcomes and consequences of the step you are going to take.

If you are working with a mission and vision, you already know the dos and don’ts. A person with principles and morals never fails in life. Just take the right steps and be clear about what you want. Ambiguity will lead to faulty decisions that will gradually hamper your growth.

Accept the fact that there is a possibility that things may go wrong after your decision. Be ready to face what is coming your way. Prepare backup plans to encounter such problems.

You should build a team that is experienced and rational. A single person may not think about every aspect of matter but a group of people will. Every mind works differently and will take a different approach to make decisions.

If you have been doing your work for a long time, you would have developed the skill and if you haven’t, practice makes a man perfect!
