Supervising may sound easy but there is a lot to do. You have to carefully examine what your subordinates are doing. If someone is new at all this, he /she may need some guidance. In this blog, Rubina Ratnakar helps you in learning supervision and doing your role effectively.

Supervision is made from two different words, super and vision. Collectively they mean to look at something with a powerful vision. There are many roles that are to be fulfilled by a supervisor.

Firstly, you need to guide the people in the work. You have to properly explain the tasks you give to them. Make them understand the nature of the tasks. Explain the purpose and the steps to be taken to complete the task. Your subordinates will perform better once they are clear about what they are doing and what will be the end result.

Always be polite with your subordinates. Don’t be rude to them. They are definitely working on a lower level than you but everybody likes to be respected. So, whatever you meant to tell them take care of the dignity.

Make them comfortable with you. If they share everything with you related to work, it will help you in supervising easily and it will help them in improving their performance as well. If they fear you they will never perform well. Encourage them to convey their thoughts and communicate without hesitation.

Train them to work with no or minimal supervision. This will result in their own progress as well. A good employee performs all the tasks assigned to him without any discrepancies and with utmost care.

When you are assigning work to your subordinates, make sure you divide the work rationally and fairly. Don’t assign more or less work to the employees if they work on the same level.

If you are going to supervise your subordinates all the time, you should start understanding their needs and emotions. Understand the level of their mental health and try to get the best out of them.
